Rudolf Diesel is the person responsible for what is now widely known as the diesel engine. Rudolf was determined to find a better solution to power automobiles and trucks than the traditional internal combustion gasoline engines. So he turned to heat and compression instead of spark plugs and ignition systems to make the fuel explode.
Using his knowledge of thermodynamics, Rudolf decided to increase the amount of compression in the piston chamber to over three times what a traditional internal combustion gasoline engines used. With this major increase in compression, Rudolf found he could get his fuel combination to explode and drive the pistons without an external sparking or ignition system.
Today’s diesel engines use what are known as glow plugs to aid in combustion, helps start the engine and keep the engine running smoother when it’s cold. However once the diesel engine has warmed up, the internal heat and compression are enough to keep it running without them.
But what makes diesel engines so popular for high mileage trucks and heavy equipment in tough conditions, is their dependability. It is not uncommon for many diesel engines to have 500,000 miles on them before they need any major refurbishing. And advances in technology have made them run much cleaner than their predecessors.
